Starting Therapy

Starting therapy can be anxiety inducing. It is very normal to have worries about speaking with a therapist for the first time, or trying to connect with a new person after previous therapy experiences.

When you first make contact with me, I will offer to speak with you over the phone to discuss your hopes for therapy and to clarify any questions you might have. At your first session, it is likely that we will focus on developing an understanding of your current concerns. The first session is also a chance to discuss what you would like to gain from therapy. This could be just a place to talk and explore, or you may be looking for active strategies and ideas. We will then make a general plan for our work together.

Therapy can help you to:

  • Develop more awareness and understanding of your emotions and thoughts
  • Increase your ability to recognise and regulate distress before it becomes overwhelming
  • Improve your mood and live a life that feels more meaningful
  • Process past events that may continue to cause distress
  • Improve your relationships

Fees and Referral Information

If you would like to receive a rebate for sessions you attend, you can speak with your GP about a getting a referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. A Mental Health Treatment Plan allows a GP to refer you to a psychologist for support. Under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you are entitled to a maximum of 10 rebated sessions each calendar year.

A standard 50 minute psychology consultation is $260.00. If utilising a GP referral under a MHTP, you will receive a Medicare rebate of $145.25. This will leave $114.75 as the out-of-pocket cost.
