Dr Keely Gordon-King, DPsych (Clin), BA (Hons)
I am a clinical psychologist, registered with the Psychology Board of Australia. I hold a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology from the Queensland University of Technology.
I have worked with clients from a broad range of backgrounds, across the adult lifespan. In addition to private practice, I have worked in psycho-oncology, providing support to people affected by cancer, living with grief, coping with pain, adjusting to chronic health issues, and managing the impact of health concerns on relationships. I have delivered many workshops focused on coping with cancer, and provide clinical supervision in this area.
I have worked extensively with people impacted by complex trauma, and have previously held a senior psychologist role in a service focused on trauma recovery. I worked for five years with an Aboriginal Medical Service, focused on providing mental health support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders.
My interest areas include:
- PTSD and trauma recovery
- Personality disorders
- Anxiety and depression
- Relationship difficulties
- Grief and loss
- Adjusting to health difficulties
- LGBT experiences
About My Approach
I draw on a number of different therapies to suit your needs. Most importantly, I practice from a client-centred approach. I prioritise understanding your goals, values, and what you would like to gain from therapy. I will check in with you to seek feedback on your experience of therapy, and always aim to create a sense of safety and openness.
I like to bring a practical approach to therapy. I focus on finding what works for each individual. I value warmth and humour, and am always open to discussing your needs with you.
I draw on a number of different clinical therapies, including polyvagal theory and mindfulness. These approaches focus on understanding your body and nervous system. By becoming more aware of messages from the body, it is possible to improve your nervous system regulation, feel less overwhelmed by intense feelings, and develop a greater sense of self-trust. I also practice Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). This evidence-based therapy focuses on assisting people to process traumatic memories in a safe environment, so that memories no longer feel overwhelming or unsafe. I also use approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy, which provide practical strategies to cope with overwhelming emotions.
